2 – Dice Checks

Rules and dice as the referee in storytelling

Simple Checks: A party rolls d6 dice to reach or exceed a certain threshold of successes. A d6 shows a success on a roll of five or six.

Comparative Tests: In comparative tests, both parties roll d6 dice and the party with the most successes wins. A d6 shows a success on a roll of five or six.

The most checks are based on the attributes and skills of the characters and NPCs.

Checks typically consist of: Attribute + Skill + Path specialties + possible bonuses and penalties from the situation (visibility, weather, tools, equipment etc…)

There is a maximum of 20 dice per check for a character.
More than that the body and mind of a normal mortal (a.k.a. player character) simply cannot cope without collapsing.

Threshold: The threshold indicates how many successes a check must bring to be successful. In principle, one success would suffice and everything above that indicates how well the check was accomplished.
It can happen, however, that the game master determines a higher threshold because external or internal influences make the check harder.

As a guide, one success means the check is barely achieved, two successes means the check is cleanly achieved, three and four successes indicate it is good to very good, and five or more successes is an outstanding performance.
